Why would anyone use a bench grinder?

A bench grinder can be used in many fields of construction. It comes in handy in woodworking, flooring, painting, or even plumbing. There are probably several other ways to use a grinder, but they don’t come to mind right now, or I don’t know about them. So let me tell you where a grinder comes in handy.

  • Carpentry – a lot of people choose to renovate their own homes, like kitchens, bedrooms, or they like to build (rebuild) their deck. Good for them, I love practical people who like to take care of their home without paying anybody else to do it. And do you know how a grinder can help you here? You can smooth rough areas, and you can even make joints to be level. When it comes to building furniture, a bench grinder is kind of a must.
  • Flooring – no matter the material on your floor, wood or tile, a grinder will simplify your work. It can raise nail heads, and it can level buckle joints. You can also use it to remove the excess grout.
  • Painting – before putting on a fresh layer of paint, you need to get rid of the old one. Otherwise, the new paint will crack and fall off very soon. That is why you need a grinder. It will level the wall, and remove the old paint. It’s like using sandpaper, only that a grinder is more efficient.
  • Plumbing – whenever you need to change some pipes, you need to cut down the old one. You need a grinder for that. A bench grinder will even help you gain access to pipes and tubes in your walls.

The benefits of a bench grinder

Although a grinder can do many things, people tend to use them mostly for one thing, and that is sharpening. But that doesn’t mean it holds no other advantages.

  • With the risk of repeating myself, a bench grinder is mostly used to sharpen things around the house. You can start from kitchen knives and end up with gardenhoes.
  • It can also be used to refine old items, and you can even use it for shaping.
  • A grinder can be very useful when you want to remove burrs in castings. If you want to dress rugged steel, no problem. A grinder will do that for you as well.
  • You can use it to fix old tools you have in your workshop. If you work with stone, then you know how quickly your instruments will lose their edges. But you can create new sharp edges.
  • The grinder has a removable wheel, which means you can replace the wheel and use something that is more suited for your needs. There are wheels for cleaning, polishing, or sharpening and shaping metal. A grinder is pretty versatile when it comes to the material you want to work on.

Types of bench grinder

There are two types bench grinder: the 6-inch, which moves at a regular speed, and the 8-inch, which is designed to run at a slow speed.

The 6-inch bench grinderruns at a standard speed. It’s the most commongrinder you will see in anybody’s workshop. It has sufficient power to handle most of the projects you have around your home. Most models run at 4 ampsor somewhere around that. The number of rotations per minute (RPM) is somewhere between 3400 and 3600. They don’t make too much noise, but they can be very heavy.

The 8-inch bench grinder runs a little slower than the 6-inch. It is designed for professionals who do extensive work. If you plan on using a buffing wheel or a wire brush, an 8-inch grinder is better. It may be slower but needs its wheel changed a lot less than a 6-inch.

Things you need to consider before buying a bench grinder

I have never met anybody who would buy a power tool without doing some research or without knowing something about it. Buying the first bench grinder you see may be a mistake because it may not suit your needs. That is why you need to take into consideration a few factors.

  • Establish what you are going to use the tool for. That way you’ll know which type you need, the 6-inch or the 8-inch. However, if you are an amateur or a beginner in DIY projects, I recommend you go for the 6-inch.
  • Make sure that it has a sturdy construction – all power tools would have a sturdy A bench grinder is heavy, but it must feel stable. If you plan on sharpening rusted metal, read the fine print of the product. Some of them have specialized uses.
  • The most important component of a bench grinder is the wheel. If you have a particular wheel in mind, make sure that the grinder is compatible with it. The most common grinding wheels are fine grit wheel, wire brush wheel, buffing wheel, and coarse grinding wheel.
  • Don’t forget about the motor. The bigger the motor, the stronger the grinder. If you work with wood, you don’t need very much strength. Working with metal, on the other hand, will require you buying the largest motor you can afford.
  • Think about how often you will be using the grinder. For occasional work, a standard bench grinder is more than enough, but if you use it on a regular basis, get the most powerful tool you can find. You want it to last, don’t you?

There are other things to consider, apart from the things I mentioned above. But one of the things I find the most useful is the toolrest. It’s a small accessory that will make holding tools a lot easier. Your work will be more accurate as well.

What are the best bench grinders

Fortunately for you and any other person who is looking for a bench grinder, your options are unlimited. There are so many models out there that it proves to be difficult which one to choose. That is why I compiled a list of three of the best bench grinders I could find.

The 6-inch grinder from WEN is one of the best bench grinders in this price range. If you want this particular model, then you should know you can also find it in the 8-inch version. It does an excellent job when it comes to sharpening or shaping metal. It was designed for home use, and it does its job well.

As for the specifications, it has a 120V, 60Hz, 1/3 HP, 2.1 amps motor. For home use, that is more than enough. The RPM reaches 3450 at no load, and the wheels are 6 inches by ¾ inches. It is not very heavy; it weighs only 16 pounds, which is a little comparing with other models. It comes with a 120V, 40W lamp, but you are going to have to buy the bulb yourself, as it is not included in the package.

The WEN has a lot of satisfactory features. It is durable for the money you pay, and using it is a piece of cake. It is one of the most convenient to use bench grinder on the market. It will do a splendid job of sharpening metal. The tool is also very easy to clean, and what you’ll like the most is that it does not vibrate. Your precision will not be affected whatsoever.  The only drawbacks I see is that the brush wheel could be a little bit thicker than it actually is. Also, if you are an advanced user, I suggest you move on from this model. Its features are not designed to satisfy the needs of a professional worker. Dewalt DW756 6-Inch Bench Grinder

The Dewalt is another bench grinder that proves to work just fine when you have home improvement projects. It has a sturdyconstruction and a 5/8 motor. The base is made of rugged cast iron. The 4 amps induction motor is designed for heavy-duty grinding operations. It weighs more than the previous model with a weight of 28.5 pounds, but that only makes it stable, which means it won’t wobble at all.

One of the features that people like about this bench grinder is that it lets you position metals in the most efficient way. The distance between the two wheels makes it perfect for sophisticated projects. For a smoother operation, there are rear exhaust ports in the wheel guards. It includes a 36-grit wheel and a 60-grit, eye shields, spark deflectors, tool rests, and a pretty informative user’s manual

The advantages of this power tool are that it has solid bearings and the wheels will not wobble. That will allow you to work accurately. It runs pretty smoothly, and it has a fast start. Changing the grinding wheel is a piece of cake. However, just like any other tool, the Dewalt has a couple of drawbacks. For example, it may take some time to stop, and the tool rest has an average quality. It is made in China, but the overall quality is superior. Click here to read more reviews and buy on Amazon

The last bench grinder on my list of best bench grinders is the one provided by Skil. It is designed to satisfy your needs when you are involved in a home improvement project, and it will do an excellent job at it. You can sharpen almost anything, level joints, and much more.

It has an average motor of 120V and 2.1 amps. The RPM is 3450 with no load, and the wheel is 6 inches (of course.) It comes with two LED lights over both wheels that will increase visibility and precision. The medium and coarse wheels will help you work on a variety of materials, and the tool rest is fully adjustable. You can position whatever you are working on in whatever angle you need it to be. The Skil also comes with a few safety features like eye shields to protect your eyes and your entire face. Also, the bench grinder has a solid cast-iron base with rubber feet for more stability.

The Skil bench grinder is very easy to use, and the wheels are easy to change. However, the only thing that is worth mentioning as a drawback is that it will not be of much help with heavy-duty operations. You can use it to sharpen everything in your garage and stuff like that, but if you are planning more complex projects, I suggest you take a look at the previous model.
